How to Put a Lifejacket On

           Wearer should be able to place a fist underneath front buckle 
Harnesses

Fitting a Harness

Both clips onto centre ring of lifejacket & webbing over head to keep it out of the way. 

Make sure you can operate the clip with one hand and only clip onto a strongpoint e.g. cockpit ‘D’ rings, binnacle (compass housing), jackstays on deck, shrouds – never the guard rail.

Remember – as long as you are clipped on you aren’t going very far

MAN OVERBOARD RESCUE PROCEDURE

Check to ensure Sling attached (Blue webbing)

Throw to MOB when near enough

MOB will place under arms or hold & can be drawn towards boat

MOB will climb back up the transom ladder or, if unable, will need to be hoisted (from midships)

Attach MOB to Topping Lift & lift up on spray hood winch (use tackle underneath chart table seat if necessary)

Cut Safety Rail cord to drop & facilitate lift & call Coastguard for medical assistance

If unable to recover, launch liferaft & place casualty there until help arrives

Warm Clothing

ENGINE START PROCEDURE

Turn red Battery switch in aft cabin to No2 (East for engine). Do not turn switch through ‘north’.

Check to ensure no warps near propeller

Check isolator, by switchboard, is on

Move throttle forwards to horizontal position (neutral) 

Press Heat button for 15 seconds, red battery & oil lights on and temperature off

Depress Start button when all red lights extinguished & green only on

If start fails turn Battery switch to 1 + 2 & retry

If still no success increase revs, whilst still in neutral

Check exhaust for water pumping after starting

Stop button & hold until engine stops (do not depress Stop button for more than 10 seconds)

If engine fails to stop, open engine compartment & CAREFULLY operate yellow lever

DISTRESS VHF PROCEDURE

DISTRESS ALERTSare to be made only when IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED (Alternatively try Coastguard on Channel 16)

Check that the main battery is switched on & depress VHF switch on control panel behind chart table seat.

Check to ensure the old GPS & Chart Plotter are switched on (otherwise no GPS position shows on the VHF)

Turn on set by rotating volume knob clockwise

Open the cover to the RED distress button & press the RED button once

If the time permits select DISTRESS TYPE i.e. SINKING, FIRE etc

Press and hold the RED buttondown for 5 seconds

Wait for 15 seconds then DEPRESS THE TRANSMIT BUTTON on the hand microphone

Speaking SLOWLYand CLEARLYinto the microphone SAY:

MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY

THIS IS YachtNAME, Yacht NAME, Yacht NAMECall Sign _____, MMSI ________

MAYDAY YachtNAME

MMSI     ____________

CALL SIGN       _________

MY POSITION IS   Give Latitude and Longitude AND ‘outside’ e.g. east of Souter former lighthouse

NATURE OF DISTRESS e.g. sinking, on fire etc

I REQUIRE IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE

NUMBER OF PERSONS ON BOARD & OTHER INFORMATION

OVER

Releasethe transmit button and wait for an acknowledgement

Keep listening on channel 16 for instructions

If an acknowledgement is not received repeat the voice distress call and message

AUTOMATIC VHF DISTRESS PROCEDURE

The VHF can transmit Distressand Positionautomatically – 

Lift cover & press red button, holding for 5 secs

The Coastguard will be alerted and call on VHF as above

ABANDON SHIP PROCEDURE

Preparation

  1. Collect RYA Sea Survival Manual from library
  2. Activate EPIRB & make Distress Call
  3. Fire parachute rockets, in pairs, if someone is likely to be within 40 miles
  4. Put on many layers of extra clothing & Foulies – warmth is a priority
  5. Wear lifejackets, inflating before entering water
  6. Have a drink & take anti seasickness tablets
  7. Throw overboard anything which will float and make a line in the water to assist SAR e.g. cushions, bedding, plastic bags
  8. Take Grab Bag
  9. Standby to launch in case abandonment needs to be rapid
  10. Illuminate deck area with deck light
  11. Access floodlight (locker behind chart table seat), insert into board 12v socket & switch on. Also sockets in fore & aft cabins (main still needs switching on) Not
  12. e: main board needs to show red light

Only do this when ship SINKING underneath, but preparations can be made.

Fill Grab Bag as below (behind Chart seat)

         Rescue Quoit                          Safety Knife

         2 Drogues                               2 Paddles

         2 Sponges                               Bailer

         Repair Kit                               Hand Pump

         Raft Operating Instructions     Sea Survival Instructions

         6 Seasickness Bags                  2 Owners Manuals

         Wet Notebook                        Log Book

Radar Reflector                       2 Thermal Protective Aids

To Deploy Liferaft

Cut Restraining strap, if necessary

Attach Painter (rope) to deck – should be done already

         Remove Liferaft & launch downwind

         Move liferaft to leeward side of boat

         Pull painter then tug to inflate

Board with lifejackets on, then cut line, paddle away at least mast length & deploy sea anchor

Final part of rescue can be tricky

BELIEVE YOU WILL SURVIVE

‘Step UP into a liferaft’ – Remember ‘Lian’ offers the best chance of survival & only abandon when necessary e.g. sinking
