We will do our best to have selected items ready for you on your first day. If for any reason we are not able too they will be posted to your home address. For items to be available on the first day of your course they must be ordered 3 weeks prior to booking date.

RYA Yachtmaster Preparation + Exam,

Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore| Yacht Sail Training | Sailing School

The RYA Yachtmaster Preparation week for “Yachtmaster Coastal” and “Yachtmaster Offshore” Certificates of Competence are gained by examinations conducted by RYA Yachtmaster Examiners at the Yacht Sail Training, Sailing School in Croatia. Examinations are independent of Yacht Sail Training. We recommend attending a period of practical training prior to the exam.

It is a requirement for overseas examinations and also good practice to ensure you have the opportunity to become familiar with the yacht. And also your crew is plus to get an understanding of the examination and cruising area. The cruising area in the adriatic is perfect for exams with excellent pilotage opportunities good sailing winds and the warm weather definitaly makes it more enjoyable.

Before Booking Yachtmaster Prep Weeks

It is essential that you satisfy all pre-requisites of mileage. Also make sure your experience and completed courses have been fulfilled prior to booking this preparation week. Do you want to refresh your sailing techniques? during the Yachtmaster preparation week there is plenty of opportunity to brush up on some of the areas that may be covered during your exam.

Please note the Yachtmaster preperation course is not designed to be teaching you sailing skills for the first time.

The Aim of the course is to polish and improve sailing performance and skills. You should read the full details of the exam requirements plus read the entire scheme syllabus in the G158 log book, we recommend doing before booking the course.

Yacht Sail Training run this course as an intensively over 4 or 5 days. Therefore preparing you for your final independent assessment by a RYA Yachtmaster Examiner normally set over the last two days. However you may choose to extend the experience and learning and join us for 9 or 10 day course for maximum benefit. The 9 or 10 day preparation course gives you valuable time for revision that may have been highlighted by your instructor during the first few days.

Pre-Exam Requirements: Yachtmaster Offshore

  • Exam fee for this level is currently £215 paid direct to the RYA on your exam form.
  • Minimum age: Candidates must be aged 18 or over.
  • Radio Operator’s Qualification: A SRC VHF Radio or higher grade of marine radio certificate.
  • First Aid: A valid First Aid certificate, only certain ones are accepted.
  • RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory certificate within 2 years is strongly recomended.
  • Sea Time: All within the last nine years in a hands on capacity on sailing yachts between 9 and 24 meters*.
  • 50 days, periods of 24hours living aboard visiting different marinas.
  • 2500 miles of which half must be tidal.
  • Five passages of over 60 miles acting as skipper for at least two of these passages, and including two which have involved overnight passages. On yacht under 24 metres.
  • A minimum of five days experience as a skipper is required.

*50% sea time can be claimed from yachts over 24 meters and less than 200gt, or between 200gt and 500gt. With supporting testimonials or Seaman’s Discharge book.

  • 30 days, periods of 24hours living aboard visiting different marinas.
  • 12 night hours.
  • 800 miles of which half must be tidal.
  • A minimum of 2 days experience as a skipper is required.

*50% sea time can be claimed from yachts over 24 meters and less than 200gt, or between 200gt and 500gt. With supporting testimonials or Seaman’s Discharge book.


Preparation Week: Four or Five days tuition followed by the exam that would take place over one or two days following the prep course OR opt to take two prep courses prior for almost 2 weeks of training prior to your exam.

What’s Included:

Once you book your Yachtmaster Sail Prep you will complete either a four or five day course depending on the date booked you will receive seven nights accommodation onboard. during the last two days you will then take the final exam. Depending upon the numbers being examined your examination will take 1 or 2 days.

Extra nights onboard are included until the exam finishes, which is within 7 days. Provisions for Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included during the examination period during the prep course evening meals are not provided unless access to the shore is not possible. You will be sailing one of our well maintained sailing yachts in 2021 will be a Sun Odyssey 49 Yachtmaster Sail.

Course Price for 4:1 ratio:

  • Starts at £1095 for 4 days prep and £1195 for 5 days prep / per person + exam fee.
  • Exam fees is £215 for Yachtmaster Offshore.
  • Exam fee is £185 for Yachtmaster Coastal.

After Completion:

After achieving Yachtmaster you may wish to add a Commercial Endorsement and STCW Basic Safety Training STCW2010/95. Once added and endorsed it will give you a wider scope for employment opportunities around the world. You may wish to convert to power through a RYA Sail to Motor Conversion Course. Converting would then make you become dual qualified.

Power and Sail Conversions

Yacht Sail training plan to soon to have options for both (Power and Sail) At present we specialise in Yachmaster Sail Courses. On completion of the Yachmaster Offshore you may also like to progress and become a Yachtmaster Ocean. The best way to do this is to start with our RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory Online course. Alternatively you may have your sights set on joining and becoming an RYA Cruising Instructor. Single Occupancy / Shared Double Cabin

Sharing a double cabin, Onboard our SO49 there will also be a en-suite bathroom. Bed linen, 1 Large Towel, 1 Hand towel. We also allow sleeping on deck under the stars, bringing your own hammock or even in the spacious saloon is also allowed. See extras when booking for all other options.

(Private hostess if required, cooking breakfast & Lunch + internal cleaning costs £1100 per course and will cook for up to maximum of 4 guests and the instructor please note a hostess is only possible for 4 students or less onboard.

Marina Fees / Tourist Tax / Fuel: All included within tuition fee. (Please take out your own travel insurance for your own peace of mind).

Travel Expenses: No travel expenses to and from the marina are included if arriving early we recommend www.booking.com for for hotels. And for flights we recommend sky scanner.com. For transfers from the airport to the marina we are happy to organise a taxi for you please book it when booking your course. Alternatively there are local taxis at the airport or Uber runs in Croatia also. 

Shore-based Courses:

We are able to advise on reasonably priced accommodation near the sea. Tea & Coffee facilities are provided and you are able to purchase lunch just a short walk from the training centre during the lunch break provided. 


Yacht Sail Training shorebased classrooms and facilities are based in Split City which is 10-15 minutes drive from the our home marina base in Kastella Marina. 

(This is also possible by Uber Taxi: Approx €10-€15euros / bus approximately €2.50 or bicycle: 30 minutes cycling).

Basic Boarding Itinerary Information:

Arrival/Embarkation Times:

Our “5 day RYA Practical Courses” commence at 9:00am on first day of the course. We ask that you turn up earlier around 8/8:30am to make sure you can find the yacht in the marina, take your cabin and meet the rest oft he crew for the course. We advise having breakfast before arriving (Please check your booking confirmation incase this changes) – 

Crew list information will be required from each student after a booking has been made and this must be submitted 14 days before the start of a course. A link will be emailed to you once a booking has been completed. 

First night may be spent in the home port marina after a day sail however if the day is progressing well we will aim to get out of the marina to one of the gorgeous islands on the Adriatic Coast.

The islands we often visit include: Brac, Hvar, Solta, Pakleni Islands, Scedro, Vis and Korcula. (Please note in a 5 day course you will not get to visit them all).

Breakfast & Lunch Provisions will be delivered to the yacht before you arrive so the course will be ready to start once you have dropped your bags in a cabin. 

Evenings: We will either be in a new port, marina or harbour, spending the night on anchor or we will return to our home port. If there are not facilities to eat ashore provisions to make food onboard will be supplied. 

(This is all depending on the weather and the particular course structure required for your chosen syllabus).

Disembarkation: All yachts will return to home port at 16:00 on the last day of the course and all students are expected to assist with a general clean and tidy up of the yacht.  

Disembarkation is usually at 4:30/5:00pm so cleaners can get onboard to sort the yacht out for the next course. 

Most students then decide to enjoy an end of course beverage in Bavadria bar located in the marina.
