GAS PROCEDURES

PREVENTION:

We can help prevent gas leakages onboard by following a few simple daily routines:

  1. Make sure the gas isolator switch is in the OFF position after the stove has been used.
  2. Turn OFF the main isolator on the bottle at night or whenever the leaving yacht to go ashore.
  3. Make sure the gas bottle is connected securely to the regulator and that the bottle is secure.
  4. Keep the spare bottle in the correct stowage point, this will have a drainage point. In the event of a gas leakage. Periodically check the drainage pipe is not blocked by pouring some water down it.

SHOULD YOUR GAS ALARM ‘SOUND OFF’ ON YOUR BOAT…

  1. DO NOT PANIC!Gas Alarms are designed to operate well below the gas lower limit of flammability.

HOWEVER

  • DO NOT SMOKE
  • NAKED LIGHTS SHOULD NEVER BE USED AS A MEANS OF LOCATING GAS LEAKS
  • DO NOT OPERATE ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
  • SWITCH OFF ALL ENGINES
  • TURN OFF ALL GAS APPLIANCES
  • TURN OFF ALL GAS CYLINDERS
  • If it is safe to do so OPEN ALL HATCHES, DOORS, WINDOWS, to allow the air to disperse the gas. Consider turning the yacht downwind
  • PUMP OUT THE BILGE with a manual bilge pump (non-electrical) and continue to pump when the bilge is dry . Any accumulated gas will then be pumped overboard.

REMEMBER

The gas you are using is heavier than air so this could take some time.

  1. Re-try the gas alarm from time to time until it ceases to ‘Sound OFF’

ONCE THIS HAPPENS

  1. DO NOT reuse your gas system until it has been inspected and tested for gas escapes by a competent gas engineer.
