Driving to Milna: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide to the Brač Island Ferry

Driving to Milna… While many visitors arrive in Milna by via the 25 minute Fast Catamaran crossing from Split, driving to Milna offers a level of freedom that public transport simply cannot match. Having a car on the island allows you to explore the hidden interior of Brač, from the ancient stone masonry of Pučišća to the soaring heights of Vidova Gora. However, taking a vehicle across the Brač Channel requires a little more planning than a simple foot-passenger catamaran ferry crossing.

At Yacht Sail Training, we often have students who choose to drive from Central Europe or rent a vehicle at Split Airport. To ensure you don’t miss your check-in for your RYA course, here is the complete step-by-step guide to driving to Milna, Split-Dalmatia, Croatia in 2026.

Step 1: Navigating to the Split Ferry Port

Your journey begins at the Port of Split (Gradska luka Split). If you are coming from the airport or the A1 motorway, follow the signs for “Split” and then the ferry icons for “Trajektna luka.”

  • Timing: This is the most important factor. In peak season (July/August), you should aim to arrive at the port at least 90 to 120 minutes before your scheduled departure. Unlike foot passengers, cars are loaded on a first-come, first-served basis within their ticket window.

Step 2: Buying Your Tickets for 2026

In 2026, the national carrier Jadrolinija operates the car ferry route from Split to Supetar (the gateway to Milna).

  • The Digital Advantage: We highly recommend buying your ticket in advance via the Jadrolinija App.
  • Cost: Expect to pay approximately €25–€35 for a standard car and two passengers, one-way. (The Fast Catamaran by foot is from €6 – €12 per person)
  • Important Note: A ticket does not “reserve” a spot on a specific sailing. It grants you passage on that day. You still need to be in the queue early to ensure you get on your desired boat.

Step 3: The Boarding Process

Once you have your ticket, look for the lanes marked “Supetar.”

  • The Queue: Park your car in the designated lane and wait for the crew in high-visibility vests to signal you. You are free to leave your car to buy a coffee or use the facilities, but stay close—loading happens quickly once it starts. If you ahve not purchased tickets you can do so in the port at the ticket office in the main building.
  • Onboard: Once parked on the car deck, you can exit your vehicle and head to the passenger lounge and upper decks. The crossing takes approximately 50 minutes. Enjoy the view of the Split & Dubrovnik ferries passing by as you leave the mainland behind.

Step 4: Arriving in Supetar

When the ferry doors open in Supetar, follow the line of traffic off the boat.

  • The Exit: You will be funneled onto the main island road. Follow the signs for “Milna” or “Sutivan.”
  • Pro-Tip: There is a large Lidl and Konzum supermarket right at the exit of the ferry port in Supetar. This is the best place to stock up on provisions for your sailing holiday in Croatia before heading to the quieter village of Milna.

Step 5: The Drive to Milna

The final leg of driving to Milna is a scenic 20-minute journey across the western shoulder of the island.

  • The Road: The road is well-paved and safe, but it can be narrow in sections with some sharp bends. Watch out for local cyclists and the occasional wandering sheep!
  • The Arrival: As you crest the final hill, you will see the breathtaking view of Milna bay. Head down toward the waterfront. If you are training with Yacht Sail Training, you will be looking for the ACI Marina Milna or the Vlaška Marina, depending on your specific booking.

Parking in Milna for 2026

One of the challenges of driving to Milna is where to leave the car while you are out at sea. Budget for up-to €60 for parking for the 5 days. You may get a free spot but best to budget incase it’s not free.

  1. ACI Marina Parking: Offers secure, paid parking. It is the most convenient option if your boat is moored here.
  2. Private Parking: Some local guesthouses offer weekly rates for sailors.
  3. Public Areas: Be very careful with street parking. The local “pauk” (towing service) is very active during the summer months to keep the narrow quay clear for emergency vehicles.
  4. Ask Yacht Sail Training – They can often advise if there is space in one of the marinas.

Why Drive?
