Yacht Sail Training offers a full range of courses with new courses and dates added regularly.

We offer RYA courses for individuals, groups and families onboard YST’s well maintained yachts, on your own bareboat charter yacht or even your personal private yacht.

RYA Competent Crew Practical Course – Practical Sail Training Course

The RYA Competent Crew Practical Course is for Sailing beginners this is a practical sail training course for all ages.

This is our 5 Day Competent Crew Course – Also available over longer periods with our Private Yacht Training.

Who Is This Course For?

For those who would like to learn to sail and become active crew members rather than just passengers.

Learn To Sail with RYA Courses.

Experience living, sailing, cooking and sleeping on board for 5 days and really get to know the boat.


Virtually all the course is hands on. This is very much a Practical Sail Training course.


You are the crew - without you the sails won't go up and the boat won't be steered.


By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day duties on board.


Pre-course experience - RYA Competent Crew (Practical)

None - This course is for any level and will teach you all the basics of Sailing.


Pre Course - Assumed knowledge

None - We teach you everything you need to know for this course onboard.


What Certificate Will I Recieve?

On successful completion you will receive:

RYA Competent Crew Sailing Qualification. 

This RYA certificate is often the minimum skippers / captains look for when inviting crew onboard to go sailing.

You should be a useful member of crew to have onboard. 


Minimum duration

This course is ran over 5 Days.


All your time is spent onboard throughout the course. 


You will be sleeping and living onboard.

Minimum age



This course is available to all ages.


Yacht Sail Training however does have a 16 year old age limit for group courses. 


Students under 16 Must be accompanied by an adult on Group Courses. 


For students younger than 16 please consider our Private Yacht Training Courses. 


Succesful Completion

On successful completion of this course the next stage would be the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course.


Followed by the RYA Day Skipper Practical course.


Once completed this will then enable you to charter your own yacht in the future.


RYA Day Skipper is one of the minimum requirements for chartering a yacht in alot of countries.

Please also consider:

You may require to apply for an ICC and a VHF license on completion of the RYA Day Skipper practical course in order to use your qualification when chartering a yacht.

ICC Certificate: 

The ICC is available free to all RYA members who are UK residents.

Where Will We Sail?

During the course you will visit some some if the 1000 islands in Croatia that will include the islands of Brac, Solta, Hvar and Vis all weather dependent, but expect to have an enjoyable training holiday.

Cruising / Training Islands / ports: 

Split, Brac, Solta, Hvar, Pakleni Islands and occasionally Vis island also depending on weather conditions. Each night is spent in a new port, anchorage or marina. 

Yacht Sail Training also offer various sailing qualification over a longer periods of 6/7 days or more onboard.

Do We Offer - Private Yacht Training? - YES

We are able to charter the whole yacht for yourself so you can take your RYA Competent Crew course in a more relaxed environment with more one to one training. 


Most RYA courses are allowed a maximum of 5 students onboard + your RYA Instructor. 

Price includes: 

All onboard expenses (Except evening meals - Evening meals are normally enjoyed ashore).
Note: Evening meals are provided if shoreside services are not available if we are on a night sail or at anchor in lovely quiet bay) 

Also Included: 

Tourist Tax, Bedding, Towels, Fuel, WIFI, Mooring fees, Provisions for breakfast and lunches, Instructor and extra safety equipment, Log book per student, Certificates on successful completion**
**Certificates will only be provided on students meeting the pre-requisites for the specific course.

Not included: 
Travel to the marina and any optional Island tours and water taxis if you decide you wanted to do them after a day’s sailing. 
Evening Meals - Unless shoreside facilities are inaccessible.

Do you take deposits?

Yes we can accept deposits for all courses that are more than 120 days prior to Embarkation. 


We normally request a 30% deposit for these bookings. 


Remaining balance must be paid on or before the 120 days before Embarkation.

Single Occupancy / Shared Double Cabin

Sharing a double cabin, Onboard our SO49 there will also be a en-suite bathroom. Bed linen, 1 Large Towel, 1 Hand towel. We also allow sleeping on deck under the stars, bringing your own hammock or even in the spacious saloon is also allowed. See extras when booking for all other options.

General Course Information

Our Courses are:

All Inclusive** (Breakfast, lunch, port fees, fuel, tourist tax, maintenance, water, bedding, towels, cleaning.

What is not included?:

Evening meals (normally enjoyed ashore), Flights and transfers and alcohol, Please read the booking form for course materials provided with each course.  

Provisions: Breakfast & Lunch will be available with menu's, all food will be cooked by the crew on a rotation basis throughout the week

Would You Like a Hostess Onboard?

Private host / hostess if required, cooking breakfast & Lunch + internal cleaning costs £1100 per course and will cook for up to maximum of 4 guests and the instructor please note a hostess is only possible for 4 students or less onboard.

Marina Fees / Tourist Tax / Fuel: 

All included within tuition fee. (Please take out your own travel insurance for your own peace of mind).

Travel Expenses: 

Travel expenses to and from the marina are not included.

If arriving in Croatia early we recommend www.booking.com for for hotels. And for flights we recommend skyscanner.com.


For transfers from the airport to the marina we are happy to organise a taxi for you please book it when booking your course.

Alternatively there are local taxis at the airport or Uber works well in Croatia also. 

RYA Shorebased Courses (Classroom)

We are able to advise on reasonably priced accommodation near the sea. Tea & Coffee facilities are provided and you are able to purchase lunch just a short walk from the training centre during the lunch break provided. 

Please Note:

Yacht Sail Training shorebased classrooms and facilities are based in Split City which is 10-15 minutes drive from the our home marina base in Kastella Marina. 


(This is also possible by Uber Taxi: Approx €10-€15euros / bus approximately €2.50 or bicycle: 30 minutes cycling).

Split Airport - Closest

Closest airports is Split.

Zadar Airport

Approximately 1.5 hours drive away. With a regular bus service connecting it to Split also. 

Dubrovnik Airport

(if travelling to Dubrovnik there is a connecting ferry or bus to Split which takes approximately 4.5 hours. Split Airport and Split Ferry port is located approximately 15 minutes drive away with regular bus services and taxi's also available. We recommend using Uber taxis.

Zagreb Airport

Located about 4.5 hours drive from Split. 

There is also a regular bus route and taxi services available from Zagreb Airport.

Arrival/Embarkation Times:

Our “5 day RYA Practical Courses” commence at 9:00am on first day of the course.

When To Turn Up?

We ask that you turn up a little earlier around 8/8:30am to make sure you can find the yacht in the marina, take your cabin and meet the rest of the crew for the course.

Will I Get Breakfast On The First Day?

We advise having breakfast before arriving

Crew List Information - Pre Boarding

Crew list information will be required from each student after a booking has been made and this must be submitted 14 days before the start of a course.

A link will be emailed to you once a booking has been completed. 

The First Night?

First night may be spent in the home port marina after a day sail however if the day is progressing well we will aim to get out of the marina to one of the gorgeous islands on the Adriatic Coast.

Islands We Visit

The islands we often visit include: Brac, Hvar, Solta, Pakleni Islands, Scedro, Vis and Korcula. (Please note in a 5 day course you will not get to visit them all).

Breakfast & Lunch:

Provisions will be delivered to the yacht before you arrive so the course will be ready to start once you have dropped your bags in a cabin. 


We will either be in a new port, marina or harbour, spending the night on anchor or we will return to our home port. If there are not facilities to eat ashore provisions to make food onboard will be supplied. 

(This is all depending on the weather and the particular course structure required for your chosen syllabus).


All yachts will return to home port at 16:00 on the last day of the course and all students are expected to assist with a general clean and tidy up of the yacht.  

Disembarkation is usually at 4:30/5:00pm so cleaners can get onboard to sort the yacht out for the next course. 

End Of Course Drinks:

Most students then decide to enjoy an end of course beverage in Bavadria bar located in the marina.
